Mecum’s Daytime Auction Set for Aug. 18-20 at Del Monte Golf Course

Walworth, Wis. – July 26, 2022 – Mecum Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction company, is set to return to the Del Monte Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa in Monterey, California, this Aug. 18-20 for its annual Daytime Auction with a selection of classic and vintage motorcycles. In addition to the motorcycles, an estimated 600 classic and collector vehicles are expected to cross the auction block, with live coverage of the event broadcast on MotorTrendTV.

Among current headlining motorcycles for the 2022 Daytime Auction are a 1918 Excelsior V-Twin with Sidecar (Lot F76) and a 1938 Indian Four (Lot F77), part of the From The Rich Schultz Collection. The From the Rich Schultz Collection encompasses 17 motorcycles, each offered at no reserve and ranging from the 1918 Excelsior V-Twin to a 1977 BMW R75 with Sidecar (Lot T158). The 1918 Excelsior V-Twin shows just 4,900 miles on its odometer and comes with an Excelsior sidecar featuring horse hair-filled upholstery. Yet another unique feature of the Excelsior sidecar is its slide-out rear axle, which extends the wheel and fender width to align with the automobile’s tracks, useful on the rutted roads of its day.

Meanwhile, Schultz’s 1938 Indian Four features first-year production items like the 120 MPH speedometer and full-color tank art. This Model 438, in bold red and black, has had several elements carefully restored, including a rebuild of the 77 CI engine, new transmission gears, the use of a Kevlar clutch and the porcelain-plated exhaust manifold topping off the exhaust system, which was restored to original condition.

Other featured motorcycle consignments include a 1908 Harley-Davidson Strap Tank (Lot S38) discovered in 1941 by David Uihlein. The Harley-Davidson was found in a Wisconsin barn about 70 miles from its birthplace in Milwaukee, and it was then kept in Wisconsin for the next 66 years. It’s been expertly restored by Paul Freehill of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and its original tank, wheels, engine belt pulley, seat cover and muffler sleeve are included with the sale.

Consignment positions are limited to 100 motorcycles, and those wishing to participate in this year’s Monterey Daytime Auction event are highly encouraged to submit a Request for Position form now for optimal placement in the auction lineup and to take full advantage of advance marketing opportunities.

Bidder registration starts at $100 and can be completed online and on-site at the auction. For those unable to attend in person, enhanced remote bidding options are available, including both online and telephone bidding. General admission tickets are available in advance online for $20 per person, per day, and for $30 at the door and online after Aug. 17; children 12 and younger receive complimentary admission.
