Things to Do in Monterey on the 4th of July

Fourth of July in Monterey County offers a host of traditional activities through which visitors and residents alike can celebrate the nation's birthday! Along with a burgeoning slate of barbecue and concert options, Independence Day in Monterey County offers no shortage of things to see and do.

Due to the State and Monterey County shelter-in-place orders and the need to practice social distancing all events are cancelled.

You can still enjoy special moments at one of the beaches, dine at local restaurants or rent a bike and burn some calories.

If you're looking for an old-fashioned, family-style 4th of July celebration, come Carmel-by-the-Sea 4th of July Celebration at Devendorf Park across from Carmel Plaza on Ocean Avenue from noon to 4pm. There will be hot dogs, cold drinks, chips, ice cream, watermelon, and cookies! All food and festivities are FREE, seriously!

Multiple events will take place throughout the day in Downtown Monterey this holiday. Start your day at 7am with a pancake breakfast with Monterey firefighters followed by a spectacular 4th of July parade that marches down Alvarado and Calle Principal at 10am.

The City of Monterey’s free “Big Little Backyard Bar-B-Que and Entertainment Extravaganza” then follows at 11 am at Colton Hall Lawn at Pacific Street. Event includes free carnival booths, games, jump houses, food for sale and more until 4:30 pm.

Monterey State Historic Park is celebrating our country’s independence with a special Living History Day from 11am to 3pm in the Memory Garden. After the City Parade, bring the whole family for some historic fun! Demonstrations include blacksmithing, rope making, leather stamping, 19th C. games, military drill and historic music and dancing. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children (6-18) and free for kids (5) and under.

Festivities wrap up at the Golden State Theatre in Oldtown Monterey with Monterey County Pops on a free patriotic concert at 7pm. Doors open at 6pm.

Pacific Grove

Celebrate July 4th in "America's Last Hometown", Pacific Grove, with an old-fashioned, down-home BBQ in Caledonia Park (behind the Post Office) from 11am to 3pm. Come and enjoy food and live music, and a chance to enjoy a patriotic celebration. This old-fashioned BBQ includes chicken or hot dogs with included sides of potato salad, garlic bread, salad and desert.

The City of Seaside will be hosting its annual 4th of July Fireworks Celebration at Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course from 4:30pm to 10pm. Enjoy live music and fun family activities then watch the only fireworks in Monterey County!

Reminder: Fireworks Prohibited

As a reminder to all visitors celebrating Independence Day all fireworks, even those advertised as safe and sane, are prohibited and subject to a fine starting $1,000 up to $2,500.
